I have been using Twitter for quite some time, and it was actually a coincidence that I found some extra functions under Retweets. Finding them was very useful for me, since I had previously searched for some of the tools that could be installed to keep track of tweets and retweets. I couldn't quite find the tool I wanted - unless I got a Mac. I will be buying the iPad as soon as it is available here in Denmark, but never mind. Back to Twitter.
In the right hand side you will find important information just under your profile name:
Tweets - telling you how many tweets you have written. I am approaching 3K tweets after little over a year
Following - How many people you follow
Followers - How many people follow you
Listed - telling you how many lists you are on
The function "Listed" can be very nice because it tells you how your followers see you. I have two lists, personally, called Friends and Internet Marketers. Lately, I have considered creating a list called Fellow Writers. You can create as many lists as you like. These can be useful to keep track of people, and tell you quite a bit about what type of users you are fellowshipping with.
Further down the right hand side you will find these functions:
Direct Messages
Favorites
Retweets
A Search Field
Trending
RSS Feed
Clicking Direct Messages will give you both the Inbox and Sent signifying the personal messages you have sent to fellow Twitter-users. These messages are not publicly visible.
Favorites will list the tweets you have marked with a little yellow star as among the best tweets. This can be very useful in keeping track of special tweets. Personally, I use this to mark announcements I have made of blog articles and special quotes that stand out as very best. You can choose any system you like.
Retweets is among the most useful features, and gives you 3 tabs: Retweets, Retweets by Others and Your Tweets Retweeted. The last tab is very useful when you want to check out which of your tweets have been retweeted by others. Please do send people a small tweet thanking them for their retweet, and do consider following them. They are somewhat special when they recognize the quality of your tweets.
The Search field is obviously for doing searches of special words you want to know what people say about. It could be some brand or perhaps your own name. You can create Twilerts (Twitter alerts) to get an automatic e-mail also, but you might have some immediate thing you would like to research. In that case the search field is a real time search.
Trending gives you an impression of what is popular on Twitter at this time. Can be very useful to spot new trends in what interests people, and you might suddenly get involved in hot topics that offer you natural chances to profile your own blog when you have written something relevant already.
The RSS feed can be useful to add to your e-mail client if you wish to get tweets listed when you start up your RSS reader in the morning to get updated on what has happened since your last RSS follow up.
