- a new study suggests eating foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), salmon and walnuts, can help prevent disease gum or periodontitis.
Periodontitis is a common type of gum, gum tissue is separated from the teeth and allows bacteria disease construir.Si untreated, the condition can lead to loss of teeth and bones.
The researchers found that people whose diets were rich in PUFA as much as 30% less likely to have the disease gum than those who ate little or nothing of this kind of fat.
"Found that the intake of n-3 fatty acids, especially Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), are conversely partners periodontitis in the American population," says researcher Asghar z. Naqvi, MPH, MNS, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, in a press release.
"Dietary therapy, if it is effective, could be a less costly and more secure for the prevention and treatment of periodontitis, method" says Naqvi."To date, treatment of periodontitis has mainly cleaning involved mechanics and local application of antibiotics".
Researchers say polyunsaturated fats already it has shown benefits over other types of inflammatory, conditions such as heart disease and they may also play a role in fighting inflammation cause gum disease.
"Given the evidence indicates a role for fatty acid n-3 in other chronic inflammatory conditions, it is possible that the treatment of periodontitis with n-3 fatty acids could have the added advantage of other chronic diseases inflammation-related prevention, including stroke, as well," says Naqvi.
In the study, published in the journal of the American dietetics Association, researchers compared fatty acid intake and risk of disease gum 9,182 adults participated in 1999 to 2004 national health and nutrition examination survey.
The results showed who ate quantities moderate to high DHA fatty acids in the diet or fish oil supplements were up to 30% less likely to have the disease gum that those who ate menores.Aquellos quantities whose diets were rich in EPA were 23% lower risk of periodontitis.
The researchers found that even modest levels of these PUFA (equivalent to less than 40 milligrams per day for the Department of Humanitarian Affairs and 10 milligrams per day for EPA) enough to significantly reduce the risk of gum disease.
Foods that are naturally high in polyunsaturated EPA and DHA fatty acids include peanut butter, margarine, fatty fish and nuts.
