Nissan Recall MI Residents' Engines May Stall in Motion: 747,000 U.S. Vehicles Recalled

Nissan Recall MI owners should know about a defect in Nissan vehicles that is causing engines to stall while the vehicle is in motion. Nissan recalled 747,000 vehicles in the U.S. and issued a recall in Europe of 354,170 vehicles while Japan is having 834,759 cars recalled. China and Taiwan are having a combined 194,409 vehicles recalled that may be affected by the engine problem.

The Nissan recall MI vehicles potentially affected are:

Infiniti QX56 (2004 2006)

Nissan Armada (2004 2006)

Nissan Frontier (2005 2006)

Nissan Pathfinder (2005 2006)

Nissan Titan (2004 2006)

Nissan Xterra (2005 2006)

Prompted by customer complaints about a rough idle, a no-start or a long cranking hesitation, Nissan began an investigation into Nissan and Infiniti vehicles in January 2010. Nissan and supplier Yazaki discovered that a silicon oxidation was causing an engine control module (ECM) to create a voltage drop. This drop was the reason for the all problems customers were experiencing.

While Nissan and Yazaki were collecting data, it was discovered there was a large backorder of parts for the intelligent power distribution module (IPDM), which is what the ECM is connected to, and both parties learned this was causing engines to stall while the cars were moving. Shortly after this discovery, Nissan issued a voluntary recall, which begins in December 2010.

Dealerships will do an inspection of these vehicles, checking the IPDM and ECM for these defects and replacing the parts as needed free of charge.
