The C Class is a compact executive vehicle produced by the German car manufacturer Mercedes, the C Class was introduced in 1993 to replace the Mercedes 190. Until 1997 the C Class was the smallest offering from the luxury car maker, the A Class was introduced in 1997, the B Class soon followed.
The second generation C-Class was introduced in 2000, it had a sportier look than the previous generation, with a steeper front-end and shorter rear-end. The styling cues were similar to that of the W220 S-Class.
In 2007 Mercedes introduced the new and current C Class, the new model has an extended wheelbase and tracks, a stiffer body shell and again the design was inspired by the most recent S-Class and some hints from the CLS-Class.
The new C Class is available with a few engine choices, petrol engines include the supercharged C180K (154bhp), the direct-injection C250 CGI (201bhp) and the 268bhp C320 V6. There are also four diesel engines the C200 CDI (134bhp), C220 CDI (168bhp), C250 CDI (201bhp) and C350 CDI (221bhp). The most popular engine is the C220 CDI as is strikes a good balance between power and economy.
All models of the C Class have adaptive suspension that automatically reacts to road conditions, the sportier models have a lower and stiffer suspension set up. In the cabin the refinement level is very high as expected from the prestigious marque. The smaller diesel engines can sound a bit gruff when worked hard, but the C-Class is still a very refined motorway cruiser.
A Mercedes C Class in Cumbria is available from Furness Park, a local dealer specialising in low mileage used cars. Currently they have a 2004 C220 Avantgarde for 8,993; they are always well stocked with Mercedes models so well worth a visit.
