The Volkswagen Transporter is in its 5th generation, the newest model went into production in 2002. The transporter is VW's light commercial vehicle, it is also available as a people carrier named the Caravelle.
The VW Transporter is available in many guises including long wheel base, short wheel base, low roof and high roof. The Transporter can also be configured to different uses:
Panel Van - Delivery van without side windows or rear seats,
High roof Panel Van - Delivery van with raised roof; there is also a third mid-roof height available with the T5, between the two traditional ones,
Half-panel - Van with side windows only in the front half of the cargo area, and only one row of removable rear seats,
Pick-up - Flatbed truck, also available with wider load bed,
Crew Cab Pick-up- Flatbed truck with double cab and two rows of seats,
Cab Chassis - (both single and crew cab), for coach builders to build special bodies onto,
Kombi - Van with side windows and removable rear seats, i.e. both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined.

A used Volkswagen Caravelle in Barnstaple is available with the choice of 2 diesel engines, 2.0 litre turbo with 138bhp or a 2.0 twin turbo with 178bhp. Both engines are available with a 6 speed manual gearbox or a 7 speed DSG auto. The 138bhp single turbo is the favourite as it is the best compromise between power and fuel economy.
Comfort wise, the Caravelle is a derivative of the transporter van hence it is not the most comfortable people carrier available but it is rugged and very practical.
