Jobs for Moms Who Want to Stay at Home
Jobs for Moms Who Want to Stay at Home

Not all moms are created equal. There are moms who really enjoy their careers and who thrive on the thrill of facing the challenges of balancing home and job on a daily basis. To those moms all my respect and admiration (my sister is definitely one of you!) But for those of us who really long for and pray for a way to give up the rat race and stay home with our families, the journey can be frustrating and daunting. Do honest jobs for moms who want to stay home really exist? The short answer is YES! I am going to tell you where they are and how to find them.

The Traditional Approach. Our first instinct when we look into jobs for moms who want to stay home is to go for the obvious. This quest usually leads down the path of multi level marketing (MLM) businesses such as Avon, Melauleuca, Amway, and Mary Kay. These businesses do offer a real, honest opportunity for moms to start their own businesses with very little start up costs. Those who are charismatic and outgoing might find theses companies to be just the ticket, as they encourage and promote team building (in fact, it is required in order to build a really profitable business), and networking. The downside is that in order to really be successful in this type of structure, you will end up having to leave your house for meetings and demonstrations, not to mention the time spent collecting and delivering orders. Also, you might need to store and manage inventory, which might not be an option if you don't have the space.

A Slightly Less Traditional Plan of Attack. Another alternative that will keep you home, and help you make a potentially steady income is to start a business in which the clients come to YOU. Alternatives in this arena include day care centers and preschools, tutoring services, hair salons, tax preparation, and tailoring. In this type of business, you set up an area in your home in which to receive your clients. You can pretty much do everything from home and all you need to get people to come asking for your services is some decent advertising, or a strong "word-of-mouth" campaign. The things to consider here are whether you will need to get specialized training for the type of business you choose. Also, zoning and other legal restrictions might not permit the kind of business you want to be operated from your home. So, do your research.

Go Techno. There are alternatives which require nothing but a home office which includes a computer with internet connection, and a phone. Becoming a virtual assistant, a medical transcriptionist, a transcriber/translator, or freelance writer are all possibilities for the mom who wants to stay home. Be conscious, though, of the fact that most of these require either training (which can range between $400 and $2000), or you have to bid for jobs and may take a while to get people to hire you. These jobs are perfect, however, for those moms who are very organized and methodical. So, they might be worth looking into.

The Totally Untraditional Approach. Of course, you could go all out and totally reinvent yourself and the way you provide for your family. Being an entrepreneur is scary, but it is also challenging, rewarding and fun. Of course, taking this type of risk is not for everybody, but for the truly adventurous it is the only way to go.

Jobs for moms who want to stay home are not impossible to find. There are a million and one possibilities out there, and perhaps that is the real problem. As with any big decision in your life, take time to way things out, but don't get stuck there. The only sure way to stay home is to start the process today. Once you choose your path, stay the course, persist without exception, and you will make it! For you AND for your family.
