Did you know that you can now grow a square watermelon from your garden? It sounds really wierd but it is true you can grow a watermelon in the shape of a square and it taste the same as a regular shaped watermelon. The people in japan have been doing this for many years and they are able to sell them for much more than regular shaped melons.
I always like looking at odd things and a few months ago I was at my local flea market and all of a sudden I noticed a square watermelon. I had to look at it at least three times before I realized that my eyes were not playing tricks on me. I walked up and asked the vendor about it and he told me that they taste the same the only difference is the appearance. I just could not figure out how you can possibly grow them this way.
He told me that the japanese started this trend because traditional watermelons were big and bulky and took up alot of room the their refridgerator. In order for the japanese to do this they grew the watermelons in a square casing so that it would take shape of its surroundings. This is a nice thing to do for a conversation piece or even as a gift for someone for the holidays. It can be well worth your time to grow a square watermelon if you are willing to put in the time and effort.
