subject: How To Select Your Plastic Surgeon [print this page]

It's exciting to think about having plastic surgery, as you know you can look forward to improving yourself. However, finding a surgeon can be a daunting task. You need to know what questions to ask and spend some time doing some research so you will be pleased with the decision you eventually make.

It's always a good idea to ask friends and family members if they know of any qualified plastic surgeons. If you can find a plastic surgeon by the recommendation of a friend or coworker, it can help so much, as it is based on a firsthand experience. Your family doctor or specialist may also be able to give you a referral. He or she may be able to give you some inside information as to which surgeon they recommend.

Unless you are 100% sure of who you want to perform your surgery, you should plan to interview a couple of licensed surgeons before making your final decision. It is important to remember that a plastic surgeon must be licensed within the state he is practicing in. As an example, you should check with the California Health Department by phone or on the internet if you are considering a surgeon in California to do your surgery. There, you can find out important information about licensed surgeons, such as where they were educated, how many years of experience they have, where they have practiced before and other things you might like to know.

Next, plan to spend some time researching the particular plastic surgery you are considering. The more you know before you visit with the proposed surgeons, the more you are going to learn. As you read and study information on the internet or at the library, write down any questions you may have. The more you know before you visit with the surgeon, the more you will understand in the consultation and you will then find the answers to your questions. Never trust yourself to remember your questions; jot them down so you will remember when you interview the doctors.

Next, you will want to set up an interview with the surgeons you are considering. Explain to the receptionist that you are considering that particular surgeon and you would like to meet with him or her to introduce yourself and get some questions answered. Any time you are not given this privilege, it is time to find a new surgeon, as this consultation visit should not only be allowed, but encouraged. A surgeon who truly cares about his patients and wants to do a good job will take the time to meet with you and discuss any and all concerns that you may have. Be sure and take your written questions, listen carefully to what the surgeon says and jot down notes and other questions that may arise as you converse with the plastic surgeon. Do not be afraid to ask the surgeon any questions including his education, experience and if there are any past or pending lawsuits. Ask to see before and after pictures of other patients, remembering that this is not a guarantee for you, but it can give you a good idea of the surgeon's ability to provide satisfaction for your situation. Consider how you feel while talking to the surgeon. Do they make you feel comfortable and relaxed? Can you ask any and all questions and get answers that are satisfactory? These are all things to consider at the interview.

After your consultation visit, you will want to visit with someone from the medical office to find out about payments, insurance and any other important information about office procedures. You will also need top plan to ask questions at the medical office of the surgeon. You need to find out who will be treating you for care after the surgery. Will it be the surgeon, an associate, or someone else they work with? You also need to find out where the surgery will be performed. If it is at a hospital, you need to get information regarding what will be required of you there and where you will be going. Some minor surgeries, such as breast implants, can be performed in an operating room at the doctor's office. However, if there is an emergency situation, you need to know what the plan of action will be.

Unless you feel very confident after your interview, continue to look for a plastic surgeon that gives you the necessary peace of mind. You need to find a surgeon that you are comfortable talking with and who is sincerely concerned about you, your health, your surgery, and your desired results. You will be able to move forward in confidence in planning your surgery once you find the right plastic surgeon.
