The Miami Hurricanes football program, especially in the 1990s was the talk of the college football world, the gold standard of which a program should be, dominating year in and year out, winning numerous championships. In recent seasons, Miami has fallen behind the 8-ball a bit, and has taken a step back, not really being in discussion for the national championship, or any BCS title games. That all may change, for next season, 2011, as the Hurricanes have scored perhaps the best quarterback in the land, Teddy Bridgewater, to helm the program in 2011.
Bridgewater will play his senior season for Miami Northwestern High School this season, but as a junior, he tore things up. Bridgewater threw for 2500 yards and 32 touchdowns, while also rushing for 500 and 5 touchdown as well. Bridgewater is a dual threat quarterback, something that Miami has been lacking for the last few seasons. Bridgewater was the only QB recruited by Miami for the 2011 season, showing that the Hurricanes have total faith in him to be the one to lead the program. The University, due to penalties imposed by the NCAA, have scholarship limitations in place. The pickup of Bridgewater, one of the most coveted recruits in the land, was a major coup for Miami, in that with their remaining scholarships available for that season, they will be able to put pieces in place to build around Bridgewater, as opposed if they were to end up with a lower end quarterback, having to recruit a second quarterback in the case of their first choice not being able to have totally worked out.
Bridgewater will likely redshirt his freshman year as that season Jacory Harris will be finishing his senior year. He will then, in 2012 compete with A.J. Highsmith and Stephen Morris for the role of starting QB. It is a competition that Bridgewater can expect to win as he is the most talented of the trio. Bridgewater has the goods to do what has to be done to bring the U back to the promised land.
The Bridgewater signing for Miami is only going to do wonders for the program. First and perhaps foremost, Bridgewater is a local hero of sorts, playing his high school football only minutes away from the Miami campus. His recruiting is also going to do wonders for the program in being able to pick up some other big named wide receivers who are going to want to catch their passes from one of the best throwers in the nation. It may be a few years down the line, but Miami may be looking back to the day they got Bridgewater committed as the day that they turned back around the program we have all known and loved.
