Seconday insomnia, which is also referred to as comorbid insomnia, usually develops as a symptom or effect of a medical condition. Overactive thyroid, heart failure, gastrointestinal disorders, arthritis, hot flashes and depression are among the conditions that can cause stress.

People who have trouble breathing or have asthma may also tend to develop this condition. Alzheimer's and Parkinsons's are also said to cause such a condition. Aside from medical conditions, this type of dysomnia is also believed that this type of wakefulness is also a side effect of some medications such as beta blockers.
