Evaluating Adjustable Dumbbells

You have a lot of flexibility when putting together a new gym as to what type of fitness equipment you will place in it. Lately, one of the more popular pieces of fitness equipment being sold at stores is the adjustable dumbbell.

The reason this surprises us is that for the past decade or so, the major types of fitness equipment that we have seen advertised on television, radio, and newspapers are all in one machines such as treadmills, all sorts of bicycles, and so on. Dumbbells, in fact, seem like a throwback to the sixties and seventies where they were among the predominant types of equipment being used in gyms.

One of the reasons for their comeback is that people are re-discovering the benefits of dumbbells. This is especially true for women, who rarely used weights in the past for fear of developing muscles. One of the main forces driving this new interest is the relatively recent acknowledgement that weight training helps to build bone density. With many women becoming more aware of osteoporosis or bone loss, working out with dumbbells offers a healthy way to not only halt bone loss but to build up bone density. And when it comes to weight training, there are few things better than barbells and dumbbells.

When purchasing as set of dumbbells, 2 features that you should pay attention to are guarantees and name brands. Because name brand companies have their reputations to protect, they are a lot less likely to try to pawn off inferior quality products on you. In fact, in many cases, they managed to become name brands solely on the basis of their product quality.

This doesn't mean, however, that you should avoid the lesser known brands. As a matter of fact, you can sometimes get even better quality from the lesser known and up and coming brands trying to establish themselves in the marketplace. But you have to have more of a buyer beware attitude. And for comparable equipment, you should definitely get non-brand name items at cheaper prices.

The best guarantees are typically those that are either lifetime in nature or ones that remain in force as long as the original buyer retains ownership. If the company is new, however, a guarantee does not mean so much as the company may go bankrupt before you've really had a chance to put their product th through its paces. A guarantee from an established company, however, is worth a great deal and should definitely be considered when evaluating two pieces of similar equipment. But, just like you read reviews of their products, you should also seek out reviews on how they honor their guarantees.

It's a lot easier to get feedback on the quality of various types of fitness equipment than it was even ten years ago. It used to be that you would have to wait for the popular review magazine to come out and hope that they were testing the product you were interested in buying. Or you would have to see if your local TV station was doing a feature article on your product or interest.

These days there are tons of review sites, many started by product users, whose sole purpose is to review products that they are using. If you are thinking of buying an adjustable dumbbell set, and you have one in mind, you can easily find what other consumers think of that product by visiting one or more of these review sites.
