I love web sites such as Travel Advisor and complaint web sites that have ethics,control their content and follow their own policies by protecting one's rights. Because we have freedom of speech we can freely say most anything on the web, good or bad.
Travel Advisor is one great resource and I'm sure there are others who their reviewers, write either good or bad things about businesses. I like this process because it gives a forum to which you can determine the validity of the complaint. I've seen business owners respond to complaints and the system seems to work well.
On the other hand, there are many complaint web sites who hide behind our great freedoms and will publish anything that is submitted, whether fact or fiction. If you wanted to say something bad or give a fake review about a competitor or person, it allows for this, and with this freedom, we all must be cautious.
If you do read and use reviews over the internet, you should make sure to check on the reviewer and try to verify the information. Is it a lie or does it seem real? It is hard to tell but there are ways. Follow the reviewer and see how many reviews they have given. Does the review even apply? Are there others complaints? Not just the same complaint by the same person under an alias. I feel there should be a history of complaints especially if this business was in the habit of doing bad things. On travel advisor you can see the similarities in the complaints and then use your own judgement to decide if the hotel is some place you would like to stay. One great source is going to legitimate web sites such as the Better Business Bureau. I would trust a third party entity such as this one for one reason. The fact they usually will try to sort through fake reviews and lies.
