We've all done it. My story was embarrassing, I started my first day on a new job, and while passing a petrol station in my new company car, i stopped to fill up. As soon as I had pumped the car full of petrol, i realised that i hadn't checked to see if it was petrol or diesel. Imagine my horror on finding out it was diesel, and my car was now full of damaging, not to mention expensive, fuel. I was forever known as the idiot who had filled their car with the wrong fuel. But the British Insurance Brokers Association has warned drivers that a third of policies will not cover this embarrassing incident. Nearly 150,000 misdemeanours involving fuel taker place each year and the majority of cases are not covered in your premium. It seems that no one is clever enough to avoid misfuelling, as the Metropolitan police spend over two hundred and eighty thousand pounds last year alone on clearing out petrol tanks where the wrong fuel had been administered.
Advice is that a driver who realises that they have put the wrong fuel in their vehicle should not start the engine, and call a recovery company to come and drain the engine as soon as possible. The cost of repair if you start the engine can cost over five thousand pounds if the car is driven on the wrong fuel, says BIBA.
