When you call your puppy his natural curiosity and his keen sense of smell will lead him to your finger and he will not resist the temptation to lick at some of the toothpaste. When he recognises that you are not telling him off, slowly place your finger just under the lip of his mouth, giving warm encouraging praise. If your puppy becomes nervous, wait and try again until some of the toothpaste sticks to his front teeth.
When your puppy becomes used to receiving your praise and a cuddle, allow the toothpaste to linger on his teeth, and then replace your finger for the bristles of a doggie toothbrush. Move the toothbrush up and down slowly, if your pet objects and wriggles stop and try later.
