Steve Martin has been one of Hollywood's incredibly influential actors ever since his career took off on TV in the late 1960s. Over the past 40 years, Martin has hosted the Academy Awards three times and Saturday Night Live fifteen times. He's hosted SNL so many times, that Universal Studios even released a DVD entitled Saturday Night Live: The Best of Steve Martin. Martin has created some of the most memorable comedy films in recent history. If you haven't seen many of his works, make sure you search your satellite TV listings for some of the following great films.
In 1987's Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Martin co-stars alongside the late John Candy, as two men who are just trying to get to their destinations. Martin's character is a business man who is trying to get home in time to spend Thanksgiving with his family, and he teams up with Candy's character because there is only one car left at the rental company so one of them would be stranded if they didn't decide to share and make the trip together. Along their journey, it seems that natural distastes, robberies, destroyed rental cars, and all sorts of terrible situations are going to make getting home as difficult as possible for the both of them. Candy's character causes Martin's character all sorts of anxiety and frustration as he seems incapable of doing anything to help them, and may actually be making it more difficult for Martin to get home in time. Martin's character eventually realizes that Candy doesn't have a family or a home to go home to, and this comedy becomes a little less funny and a little more emotional. The gay wedding planner who envisions a wedding quite different from the one Martin imagines, along with the $100,000 price tag, cause Martin quite a bit of stress.
