The HR-24 DVR-500 is the replacement of an old SD DVR-100 and R15 used in combination with a DVR HR-22. When I initialize the device that I saw the announcement that the B-band converters are not installed. The customer service representative for Direct TV said to ignore this warning are not required in 23 or 24.
Well, after loading all the software and initial setup, I got a code 771, which was looking for a signal or satellite. I checked the signal strength on both tuners while you wait patiently to stop to talk to a real live person and the strength of the two tuners is excellent.
After two hours of troubleshooting that he was convinced that my dish set-up or who had requested some cables wrong. Set up a service call for a Saturday afternoon and say goodbye to me. I was furious because my DVR did not understand that other well-worked, even after changing the cables again. As a last resort, I have the old B-band converters convert 22-24 and the error is gone, everything is beautiful!
It seems that someone would know something of its new product experience and learn how to ask if you have installed the converters, not shipping with the new drive.
I asked converters B-Band Direct TV, absolutely not! I found the new online for $ 6.95 plus postage free. Direct TV becomes enough of my money now!
Once up and running, I found the best DVR HR-24, 22. There is a very short pause when switching channels, but nothing like the larger units.

HR-24 Setup
The HR-24-500 DVR is replacing an old R15-100 SD DVR and it will be used along with an HR-22 DVR. When I was initializing the unit I saw a warning that B Band Converters are not installed. The customer service rep at Direct TV said to disregard that warning, they are not required on the 23 or 24.

After two hours of troubleshooting the guy was convinced that my dish needed fine tuning or I had some bad wiring. He set up a service call for a Saturday afternoon and bid me farewell. I was furious that they didn't understand that my other DVR worked fine, even after switching the cables from the new one. As a last resort, I put the old B Band converters from the 22 on the 24 and the error went away, all is wonderful!
It seems that someone at Direct would know something about their new product and know to ask if you have the converters installed, since they're not shipping them with the new unit.
Did I order B Band Converters from Direct TV, absolutely not! I found brand new ones online for $6.95 plus free shipping. Direct TV is getting enough of my money already!

First off, I understood about the two year extension along with the lease purchase I was doing. (Besides, we're not reviewing DirecTV's policies, we're reviewing Amazon/HIDEF Lifestyle and the HR24, right?)
(1) Purchase at 12:00 EDT Wednesday June 2. Promised to ship by June 4 and estimated delivery date was June 11. This was delivered via UPS on June 4. Not shipped, delivered. Decoder box, remote, all cables for any kind of hookup desired (including HDMI) in the box. So yeah, speed-wise I give this 5 stars.
(2) Activated with DirecTV via phone. Two surprises. First, my original 2 year contract is up this November. I am now contracted through June 2012. The clock started ticking the moment the unit was activated. Second, this was an upgrade from an SD television and box. The return "kit" will arrive in 2-3 weeks, but all they require me to return is the box. So I'm walking away with a spare remote. Or as the DirecTV tech called it - I now have his/her remotes. :-)
(3) The unit itself is as advertised (or reviewed) - fast. Reset and schedule load time is noticeably quicker. Better yet, I am not seeing and delay in recognizing activity from the remote. My other HD box is model HR23, and yes, it's frustrating to key a channel in directly and have to give it 4 tries because it takes time to "wake up". A (new?) feature I haven't used yet is that it appears it can deliver 1080p. I'm currently hooked up to my 2 year old Sony Bravia, which my HR23 was using. (The new BRavia arrives tomorrow.) Every time I turn it on the box tells me that I can "improve my experience" by taking it up to 1080p. I didn't think any dish/cable programming was done in any better resolution than 1080i/720p. I'll update my review about this later this week. For now though - 5 stars.
