Whether you are depressed or anxious, your inability to forgive yourself for your perceived actions or omissions, may be the very thing that is holding your symptoms in place. We judge ourselves harshly, expecting to be perfect at every turn when that is unrealistic, and a sure way to not to allow happiness into our lives. We may feel we have let ourselves down or let others down or we may feel disillusioned with life itself, for letting us down in some way. Whatever has happened to make us feel depressed or anxious, it is not worth continuing to punish ourselves for it.All that happens by doing that is that, we continue feeling awful, suffer for nothing and keep ourselves cut off from love, support, joy and self-worth; all of which we can access right now, by making a different choice. If we choose to forgive ourselves we will feel freer, happier and lighter. Forgiveness does not mean that we agree with the way things happened, just means that we are unwilling to allow it to cause us pain any longer, or to use it to feel badly about ourselves.Forgiving ourselves is the best thing we can do. We can forgive ourselves for feeling frightened or angry or weak or whatever we have chosen to blame ourselves for. We can be our own worst enemy;the judge who passes sentence and the executioner who carries the sentence out. No matter what has occurred, judgment is not the answer. From another level, we are innocent. We did the best we could with the resources we had available and that is all anyone can ask of us. If we could have done better we would have done, so why beat ourselves up about it?Maybe we made some mistakes, maybe we feel like a failure because we expected a lot from ourselves that we failed to live up to. The thing is, would we judge somebody else as harshly as we judge ourselves? Would we withhold love from another person who had just made a mistake or would we forgive them?If we want to move on from feeling depressed or anxious, we need to start forgiving ourselves for everything that we have done that we feel is "less than good enough". So, let's choose to forgive ourselves today, turn a new page in our lives and vow to support ourselves in feeling good.Copyright 2010-06-13 Maria Parkinson
