Neuro-Linguistic Programming - Reframing Your Mind With Hypnotherapy

Last week, my husband received in the mail, a CD he had ordered online titled, Change Or Die, by Alan Deutschman, (c. 2007 HarperCollins) Today, the book version arrived in the mail. When I asked him how he liked the CD, or if he'd listened to it yet, not surprisingly, he answered that he in fact, had not begun to listen to it - and now, I can see by his glassy stare, he's quickly going into a state of "overwhelm," because he's not only behind schedule in his listening material, he now has the book to read, too! Ironically, while the title of the book is what prompted my husband to reach for his wallet, because it seemed to be exactly what he was looking for: Incentive to improve, a prompt, a trigger - something to inspire him to action! But, the title of the book alone, proved not enough.

The purpose of this article is not to disparage my spouse's lack-of-attack on projects - it's to talk about hypnotherapy as a means to overcome such obstacles. We all have the hope that if we could just purchase the "next best piece of information - the book, the CD, etc., only THEN we could find out how" to overcome what we perceive to be our own shortcomings.

When we opened the package with today's new arrival, I picked up the book and began to scan through the pages. What I had intended to be a brief, "Cliff Notes-Capable" perusal, became a more in-depth, interest and curiosity in the topics and methods for personal change, that were contained within the pages.

In the book, I found a quote from Dr. Dean Ornish. He stated, "People don't resist change, they resist being changed." As a hypnotherapist, this statement set off alarms within my mind, and gave me new ideas about the possible reasons for the differences in people and the varying rates at which change comes for everyone. For example, why can some folks be heavily addicted to drugs, and be "scared straight," in a day, never to use drugs again, while for the vast majority of people, some of whom face long prison sentences and the certainty of death with continued drug abuse, find they are still unwilling or unable to change their addictive patterns?

Hypnotherapy utilizes a technique called Reframing. It is also commonly used in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Reframing is a method for eliciting change in a person's mindset about a specific situation, Studies will show that it is an unrealistic expectation to believe that you can ever change someone else's mind. What we're left with as hynotherapists, is the conclusion that WE aren't doing ANYTHING - it's the patient/client who is really doing the work of changing their own mind! As the facilitator, we assist by tapping into subconscious thought patterns, which affect the neurological responses and behaviors of the person, and help them allow for positive changes in their mindset about their situation, while hopefully, also showing them what they already had inside them the entire time-- the Incentive to improve, the prompt, the trigger that 'something,' to inspire them to action!
