We do not See God, but God Speaks to Us in Everything
We do not see God with the naked eye but we see Him in the eye of our mind. I walked once in the beautiful garden of a French Buddhist. Beautiful afternoon, the sun was shining and the sky was crystal blue. The garden of was fall of flowers and fresh and olive and palm trees. The Buddhist was proud of his garden. We went about where while he watered some of the roses and lilies at the front of the garden near his stone built house.
Admiring the work he did for his garden and especially the beautiful dark red fresh roses, I asked where did his roses come from. He responded from the neighboring green house that he frequents from time to time.
But realizing that he did not understand what I meant, I gently repeated my question and before he bought them in the green house where did he think roses came from? He said from the whole salesman in the South of France. Then, I abruptly asked the Buddhist: and before that? The Buddhist looked at me with amazement understanding what I was aiming at.
He said: I do not know, but I do not believe in a creator, if this is what you are aiming at. These roses must have lived for ever before and happen to be now in his garden, and he is pleased to look after them.' He was pleased with his answer. When I pressed for more penetration into the question and said: You are confirmed Buddhist, and certainly meditate on this universe with all its living phenomena, life manifestations, especially roses.'
He told me that the world is eternal and everything is eternal, the world is not created, for there is no creator. I then asked the Buddhist whether he sees beauty in the red roses. He conformed that he feels beauty and harmony in the roses.
I asked him whether he did not appreciate this sense of aesthetics and where did this sense come from. He answered that he did appreciate this sense but does not see anywhere where this sense in us come from. I pressed for the shape, color and form of a big dark red rose on the end of the rose row, and asked whether o not he sees a mystery in such a rose.
He agreed that he sees mystery in the rose but such a mystery can be explained in the old eternal existence of everything. But when asked about the origin then he declared that there is no origin the origin might be nature to him. But, what is nature? I asked. Nature to the Buddhist explained that nature is what we see and fee about us. There is no need for a creator to bring things about.
I asked the Buddhist whether he does not see a hand of a designer in the beautiful rose. He said no. I asked him whether or not he would see life or death in this rose. He said that he agrees with me that the rose has life in it, otherwise it cannot be what it is. When questioned and this thing namely life, what is it?
No answer was more that what he saw in the rose was life only. When asked about where life of the rose came about from? He turned his lower lips and said: I have not got the faintest idea. I further pressed about the conditions of the survival of the rose namely, air, oxygen, water, earth, sun, atmospheric pressure.
He returned to his explanation about nature. Nature, then is a powerful, intelligent, with sense of directionality and finality to bring about such a beautiful rose with a sense of aesthetics embodied within nature. He said yes,. I asked him is this not God then? He said maybe, but I don't believe in God. This rose presents energy simply, part of the universal energy.
When asked about the energy, what is it and where does it come from and why should there be energy, like its manifestations, the rose: in short a pressed the question of why should there be a rose? And why should the rose arose in us a sense of aesthetics?
