Ecuador Attempts to Stem Emigration of Citizens Seeking Work

In recent years, Ecuador has seen many of its younger citizens leaving their home country in pursuit of higher wages in other parts of the world. This trend has led the nation to implement a program to entice immigrated Ecuadorians to return to their home nation.
According to the New York Times, more than one out of ever 10 Ecuadorians has left Ecuador in order to find work abroad. Many likely hope that they will be able to send family members who are still in Ecuador aninternational money transfer to help pay for bills, education and other expenses.
Many immigrants from Ecuador are moving back home because of a recent initiative created by the government known as the Welcome Home Plan. This program provides grants and other financial assistance for those who have moved out of the country, according to Public Radio International's (PRI) The World.
However, there is some question about whether or not this initiative will benefit Ecuador as a whole. "Ecuador's economy relies heavily on remittances from its citizens abroad," said PRI correspondent Jelena Kopanja. "Still, officials say bringing migrants home makes economy sense."
According to The Migration Information Source, Ecuador's current president, Rafael Correa, has reached out to groups of Ecuadorians living overseas and promised to include them in both the politics and economics of the country.
