Renault has revealed a new, ultra-compact city car designed to give young drivers experience in city traffic. The new Renault Twizy will go on sale at the end of 2011 and one version that requires no driving licence will be available in some countries.
The Twizy is modern and full of character with open bodywork, gull wing doors and a widescreen that extends over the top of the vehicle. Comparisons will be drawn to scooters, as the Twizy combines the joy of open air motoring (thanks to its enveloping body and side deflectors) with protection from the elements. Inside, the new Renault compact can seat two people in tandem, and there is space underneath the rear seat to stow luggage. An additional 3 litres of storage space can be found either side of the steering wheel.
The Twizy comes in two versions, one of which is powered by a 20hp motor and requires a driving licence, while the other comes with a 5hp motor and, depending on the country, does not require a licence. Both versions have a 7kWh battery located under the front seat, which can be charged via an extendable spiral cord. The cable is compatible with roadside charging facilities and can also be plugged into a 10A household electrical supply.
Safety features are built into the car, which has a deformable structure, a low centre of gravity resulting in good stability and disc brakes to ensure efficient stopping power. The Renault Twizy holds occupants in place with a safety harness at the front and three-point safety belt at the rear, so they are under no requirement to wear protective gear.
