The Beaches of Goa
The Beaches of Goa

The beaches of Goa were made famous back in the 60s with the arrival of the hippies overland from Europe. Since then, the region has slowly grown in popularity and now sees several thousand visitors each year. The people come for many different reasons but despite the large influx of tourists every year, Goa has managed to maintain it's charm.

Some of the beaches of Goa have become a little too busy, I don't want to lie to you. beaches such as the famous Calaungute have become very touristy destinations and now resemble more of beach resort of Tenerifie or somewhere. But I don't want to talk about that, I want to tell you about the 'special' beaches of Goa. The ones that either lie deserted, slices of paradise untouched by human hand and those which although may be very popular, still manage to maintain a uniqueness and innocence that they have managed to maintain making them perhaps the best holiday destinations in the world.

Some of my favourites include the following:

Palolem

The long, half-moon shaped beach at Palolem has got to be one of my favourite locations on earth. The beach and the connecting village has become one of the most famous beaches in Goa but amazingly it's charm has not been crushed under the mass tourism. There are still cows on the beach, fishermen, and forests next to it. The beach is lined with shacks offering refuge and shelter for weary travellers and food for their empty stomachs. Most people end up just chilling, relaxing, maybe a game of frizbe, another beer. If your heading over to Goa then be sure to stop by Palolem on your trip.

Arambol

The quiet beach of Amabol can be somewhat overun on Sundays but for the rest of the week the small village provides a very quiet retreat. Arambol has nearly 16 km of pristine beach and towards the Northern end, is a separate little beach named Kalacha beach. Harmal beach is the most popular of the two beaches but it is still possible to find yourself alone. Life at Arambol is pretty simple but there are loads of things to do if you have the energy including Yoga, paragliding, shopping and dolphin spotting.

Morjim

Another one of the truly magical beaches of Goa, Morjim is an extremely relaxing place to be with enough people about to maintain a nice blend of excitement, party and relaxation. The beach is perhaps most famous for the Olive Ridley turtles which choose this beach as the their nesting ground. Once a year large crowds form to witness the great hatchings.

All in all the beaches of Goa offer a great range of variety for all types of travellers whether you are weekend travellers, honeymooners, ravers or just want somewhere where you don't have to talk to anybody - Goa's beaches are perfect!
