There are a lot of myths that circulate about Internet marketing in general, but many of the rumors are based on the affiliate marketing field. Sometimes even those who have never marketed online have a negative perspective on affiliate marketing because of the things that they have heard in the online and offline communities.
Affiliate marketing is a legitimate business, but as in any type of business, there are always a few that ruin it for everyone else. Money can be made when marketing online and therefore, sometimes people take advantage of the situation and practice unethical techniques in order to make as much money as possible. This sheds a bad light on those who are affiliates that only use ethical strategies. Due to the questionability of some tactics, there are a lot of myths about this marketing path and here are the top 5:
The first myth about affiliate marketing is that all marketers in this industry use poor tactics, such as spamming and misleading people. As noted, not every single person has the best intentions, but the majority of people do. Not every single person in the field is looking to scam people.
The second myth is that the products that affiliate marketers promote are overly priced products that are not really worth anything in the end. In actuality, many Fortune 500 companies use affiliate marketers to promote their products online.
Another myth is that affiliate websites only contain links and ads to the products that are being promoted and do not contain any worthy content or information. While this can happen (a questionable tactic), many affiliates run blogs or other types of websites that provide in depth information on the products or services which they are promoting.
The fourth item that may be floating around out there is that affiliate marketers are not regulated when they make blog posts. Truthfully, if a blogger is recommending a product or service that they are promoting, they should be and are required to state that in their blog post.
The final myth is that people in this field work very little and make a ton of money. It is true that some people in this business make a lot of money and don't have to work a lot anymore, but it is not that common. In order to play hard, you have to work hard and the same is true in the affiliate marketing field just like it is in any other business.
There are many more myths about this industry that could be covered, but the 5 above touch on some of the more common ones. It seems like every time there are a few people making a good living doing something, other people have to attach negativity to it. For every person who has given the field a negative reputation, there are a hundred people (figuratively) that are doing the right thing.
