subject: How To Avoid Air Conditioning Problems [print this page]

Most people are undoubtedly aware of the necessity of regular maintenance on a vehicle. If you don't change the oil on your car every three thousand miles, your engine will begin to have problems. If you never change the oil in your car, it's only a matter of time before the engine burns up. If you don't have your tires rotated every five thousand miles, your tires will begin to warp and wear irregularly and it won't be long before you have to buy new tires. But even people who always maintain their automobiles, sometimes neglect other important engines in their home, the furnace and air conditioning units. Just like the engine in your car, your air conditioning unit needs regular maintenance in order to function properly.

One of the easiest ways to maintain your air conditioning unit is to keep it free from clutter or debris. Since your unit is located outside, it is exposed to the elements. Many people have their air conditioning unit located in an out-of-the way place, and it is common for weeds to grow up around the unit, which may cause serious problems. Weeds can grow up into the unit and obstruct proper function. Make sure your air conditioning unit is completely free from potential weed growth or any brush, leaves, or toys that might cause harm to the unit.

Another problem with the location of your unit might be an infestation of bugs and pests. Some types of bugs or aunts are attracted to the electrical components used in your air conditioning pump. If the bugs and pests get inside the unit they can cause serious damage to the electrical components and even cause the unit to malfunction. Check your unit frequently to make sure this is not the case. It might be a good idea to spread some kind of non-harmful pesticide around your unit to avoid this kind of infestation.

Another way that you as a homeowner can maintain your air conditioning unit is check your air vents. Air vents that are blocked or obstructed can cause problems with the efficiency of your air conditioning. Take the grill off of the vent and make sure that there are no obstructions under the grill. Vacuum the grill and vent opening if necessary. Also, make sure no toys, pillows, or blankets are piled on top of vents. Return air grills are especially important.

Small continuous acts of maintenance like this can greatly reduce the likelihood of a serious problem in the future.
