An Introductory History Of Counter-Strike Source

All gamers will have heard of Counterstrike and Half Life. That's not just old Half Life, but the games that run on the new source based engine. The titles are a landmark of online gaming and game servers.CS was originally a hobby mod based on the Half Life engine. In 2000, Valve chose to retail the mod. Gamers sat through 19 beta releases before being able to play the first full version of the game. After all that, there followed 7 big updates to the game, one of the biggest and most talked about with the update from 1.5 to 1.6. Many people believed that this update ruined the game as 1.6 was only released on Steam. Hardcore players still play 1.5, even though WON has been long dead. Although some would argue the only ones playing on these illegal game servers are those that don't want to buy a legtimate copy of the game. 1.6 allowed modders to add maps, sounds etc. Still now, there is a large group developing maps and mods for Counterstrike game servers. This goes to show how popular the game still remains.Counterstrike Conditions Zero servers were released shortly after in 2004. The game was essentially a facelift that allowed you to run bots on single player. The game was based largely on the Quake II server engine and did not have the success that was expected with only 2.9 million retail sales of the game from December 2009 as opposed to 4.2 million during the same period. Valve released Half Life 2 in November 2004, and this also saw the release of Counterstrike Source, also known as CSS. This brought the graphics up to date for the time. The release of Half Life E1 also brought an update to the source engine, back in June 2006. With the original engine needing a reasonably powerful PC for the time did mean that it took a while for people to start getting into CSS. When they did many did not really look back, some people still prefer 1.6 to this day after playing CSS for many years. CS Source also had more ability to modify the game.Since the first version, CS has always had problems with cheaters on Counter Strike Source game servers. VAC or Valve Anticheat is a good option, however it's not the best anticheat. Which is why you find organisations such as Steam Bans that work on submissions from game server admins. But still there is no substitute for a good old fashioned human admin. However it is just unrealistic to have admins on their servers 24/7. To help this many mod developers have coded kick and ban scripts which allow people to start votes to get rid of people. As of the time of writing there is still little word on the future of Half Life and Counter Strike. CSS has lots a great deal of players to both Battlefield and COD. We will have to wait and see what Valve do!
