Strapping or bundling is the most common type of packaging strategy used. Packaging straps come in different materials and styles. The method is done by placing a strap made of a certain material to an item, to hold and to fasten it during transportation. This packaging strap also helps in securing the item and to avoid shifting. The packaging strap is usually made of packing tape and plastic strap but there are still other materials used like paper, polyester and steel varieties. The packing strap used will depend upon the size and overall weight of the package.
Paper strap is used to secure paper products; it can be removed quickly because cutting is unnecessary so less time will be used in removing straps. The most widely used straps are plastic straps. Plastic straps are used for strapping palettes; it is used for strapping light to medium-weight materials and can be stretch at a certain point. If it extends that limit, it will be broken beyond repair.
Another packing strap used is the polyester strap. This is more durable than plastic and close to the strength of steel. Polyester strap made of Nylon is best when it comes to durability and strength but it is very expensive. Nylons are best used when the package needs to be stored in cold rooms because nylons are best with low temperature.
Another packing version is the woven and corded strapping made of polyester and rayon. It requires the use of a buckle for closing the joints. The advantage of this strap is that it has larger system strength than steel strap. It is best used for sea transportation because the strapping stays on its place.
The strongest strapping material is steel. This is ideal in extreme duty holding like in construction sites where big and heavy materials are moved around. Steel strapping is also considered as the oldest method in bundling. The strap is coated of wax or paint that will even out the tension on the object. Steel straps are usually sealed through welding.
The packing strap that will be used on materials that need bundling depends upon the kind of items where the strap is applied. Also, the kind of strap used will depend upon the condition and the way the item needs to be transported. Light items can be bundled by paper, plastic or polymer; medium weight items need more sturdy materials like polyester; and heavy items need sturdier strap like steel strap to secure them and avoid untoward incidents.
