subject: The Mac World Cup [print this page] The Mac World Cup The Mac World Cup
When was the last time you watched "America's Got Talent" and got goosebumps as some little guy or gal puts on a performance that leaves your jaw on the floor? I am serious when I say that my MacBook does exactly that for me.
I never cease to be amazed at what this little machine can do. Tonight I received a regularly scheduled article from my buddy who publishes a syndicated column in most of the off-beat newspapers in our local area. I was relaxing with my mp3 application banging out my humungous playlist of favorite tunes.
I decided to leave the player running as I read the email he sent me. I clicked on his document attachment to open it and waited a few seconds as my word processor launched. Once it did, I exported the Word document to Adobe pdf format. While that was going on, I opened Filezilla and connected to my server. I uploaded the saved pdf to the server then launched a Windows inside my Mac OS. Parallels fired up windows in about 25 seconds and I was ready then to open one of the only two programs I have left that don't run natively on Mac OSX.
From inside Windows, I launched Xara Web Designer Pro and opened the website I created for my friend some months ago. I navigated to the page that holds the article posts and posted his article. All the time, my tunes are rocking up a storm!
While the Xara web file was saving, I went to the trash can and emptied the 2770 files that were sitting in it from some early house keeping I had done.
As I closed out Xara and shut down Windows, I noticed all the things running on the Mac dock. I had Techsmith's SnagIt running, Open Office, Microsoft Entourage, VLC Media player, Microsoft Word, Flock Web Browser and Adobe Acrobat. My tunes continued with barely a hiccup. Maybe it was the music, but as I looked at my left forearm, there they were - goosebumps!
There I was at 10 pm at night - alone in my office - only a small desk lamp lighting a small corner of my desk. I looked down at the MacBook lighted keyboard and felt how cool the machine still was to the touch. As "Dancing in the Dark" pounds out it fury I look at the wall and yell "Yaaaa" as I do a double fist pump!
Did I just win the world cup? No - but for me it was the same sensation our brothers in Spain just felt.
