Servicing your car- A How To

A car should be serviced on average every 10,000 miles to ensure optimum performance. If there are any major problems that you have noticed from driving the car then it is best to take it to a mechanics to let them work their magic as the process is pretty long winded. If you ever wondered what exactly they did when your last Audi Servicing took place then read on here!

A service starts with all of the right tools to hand including a drainage bucket and a pair of car ramps and the first stop is to checkthe water level in the radiator. This is done through the header tank which you can check to see if the water is between the low and high level limits. To re-fill this, you will need to ensure the engine has cooled right down and check the radiator top. If this is full, place the radiator cap on and top up the header tank so it is up to the full level mark. You must remember that when changing coolant, use radiator coolant only. It would be wise to check that the hoses that are connected to the motor are not soft and not leaking any fluid. If they are soft, this should be checked and replaced.

Next, the fan belt needs to be checked for any cuts or marks that could progress into bigger marks that will cause you to break down unexpectedly. The oil filter will be changed on every servicing being the main cause of wear and tear is the dirt generated from the motor running over time. Car oil filters can be hard to reach and filter removers can be used to make this section easier. Oil used in the car should be of a high quality and if you are unsure on the type of oil this will be listed within your car manual. The correct amount of oil used is extremely important as too much oil is in fact worse than not enough.

Your car battery will need to be checked in the servicing ensuring there are not loose ends and the battery will be cleaned with a rag. If there are any green particles covering the engine then this can be cleaned in hot boiling water and covered in Vaseline on the bottom as this is the area that will leak acid.

Your tyres will be checked fully, inside and out ensuring there is no excessive wear and tyre that will affect your drive as well as the brakes and power steering fluid, which will be checked to ensure it is at the full mark.

Automatic transmission workwill be carried out by a transmission specialist because of the cleanliness involved. If any small particles get inside the gearbox it will play havoc with the gearbox. I made that mistake with a friends used Audi Lancashire, but never again!

To complete the DIY service, all of your lights and indicatorswill need a check and replacements will be fitted if faulty. If you decide to carry out this servicing yourself, then make sure to take it next time to a specialist mechanic who will make sure everything is looked over properly.
