We live in a world that seems to just keep getting more hectic, crazy and fast-paced. Everyone wants to "Keep up with the Joneses". Everyone wants instant gratification. We are bombarded with 10's of 1000's of messages a day to buy this or buy that. We have 500 channels to choose from, cell phones we can't escape from, 100's of emails to go through, etc. etc. etc.
We have more to do and it seems like we have less time to do it. We have less time for ourselves, less time to relax. Less time to do the things we want to do for ourselves. And we have less time for fun.
The bottom line is that "stress" sucks. It literally sucks the life out of you. "Stress" is a killer! It makes you sick. It lowers your immune response. It steals your energy and it makes you chronically tired.
According to Mayoclinic.com, "stress" symptoms may be affecting your health, even though you might not realize it. You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent forgetfulness or your decreased productivity at work. But sometimes "stress" is to blame. Indeed, "stress" symptoms can affect your body, your thoughts and feelings, and your behavior."
It can cause depression, anxiety, self-doubt and feelings of helplessness. It can cause you to lose sight of the big picture, make you settle for less and it could keep you from setting goals.
It affects your sleep, your lifestyle, your relationships, your financial situation and most everything else in your life. It makes you angry, irritable and hard to be around.
It also makes you fat because of all the extra cortisol running around your body like an out of control freight train. So if you've been trying to lose weight and you're having a hard time, you should take a look at how much "stress" you have.
So "stress" is something that virtually everyone has. It's like a runaway virus that infects everyone and makes their lives miserable.
WHO NEEDS IT?
I don't want it and my guess is that you're reading this because you don't want it either. The question is how do you get rid of stress now? The answer that follows is the first in a multi-part series of articles.
This series of articles on how to get rid of stress will give you one strategy, one quick way to look at stress differently and do something about it right then and there. Any one of the steps I share with you could virtually eliminate your stress. The reason I know that is that I have used each one of these at various times in my life to help me deal with the overwhelming situations I had to deal with.
All of these ideas do work, but you'll have to work them. The question is, will you?
If you do, very soon, you'll gain control of your stress, be happier, be healthier, sleep better, have more energy and no doubt, you'll improve your relationships. And that's really just the tip of the iceberg.
So let's get to it.
Step 1 in how to get rid of stress is to define it for yourself so you know exactly what it is so that when it comes up, you can identify it and you can do something about it. If you don't identify it, a number of things will happen. The first thing is that you could start to label many things that are happening as stressful when in reality, they're not.
In addition, defining something actually puts the ball in your court. It puts you in control because it's your definition and therefore you can decide what is stressful and what is not. If you haven't defined it, then you're at its mercy.
So, take a look at what stress means to you. Just spend a few minutes and write down your definition. When you figure it out, read article # 2.
