21st November 2009
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi while addressing an election rally at Ranchi(Jharkhand) said that poor people are the strength of this country, but our opposition feels ashamed of even discussing them. He said, "This election is an election between two ideologies. One ideology talks of aam aadmi represented by Congress and other is that of rich and selected people pushed by our opposition."
He cited his visit to a village with a British Minister to show him the strength of the poor villagers. He said, "I took a British Minister to a village and spent night there. That minister had asked me to show the real strength of India. I suggested him to come out of big cities and go to the villages. The British minister understood the strength of India but our opposition has not still understood that; they ridiculed my visit saying that I am making a mockery of villagers." He said that whatever development is visible in this country is due to the hard labour of the poor people. "They don't want to talk about the poor, they even don't see the labourers in Delhi," he said.
Congress General Secretary said, "In the general election of 2004, Congress had contested the election with the promise of working for the poor, adivasis and Dalits and we fulfilled those promises. But our opposition fought the election with a slogan of India Shining which they prepared while watching a television advertisement. They did not go to the poor and did not talk to you about your problems; and you showed them the door. They are still doing the same; they don't want to talk about the poor, adivasis and Dalits."
He further said that the UPA government has done a lot for the poor. "Our government has launched the biggest ever employment guarantee programme, NREGA, providing 100-day employment to the poor. Government waived the loan of millions of farmers worth Rs 60,000 crores. It is carrying out Mid-day meal scheme in schools providing food to the poor children." He further said that the fund meant for adivasis does not reach to them due to corruption. He appealed to them to vote for Congress for an efficient and stable government in Jharkhand.
