subject: You Can Use Grow Lights For Your Houseplants [print this page]

A lot of people do not attempt to grow pretty houseplants because they are convinced that they do not possess a green thumb. It seems to them that even if they touch a plant it will die and they just never could get the hang of growing things. Actually, it of course has nothing to do with the color of their thumb, but everything to do with what they did not learn about growing plants. Where many people fail with growing houseplants is that they will treat all of their plants the same, but this is not how it works.

Some plants are a lot harder to grow than others. Finicky plants like violets, orchids and roses are really not for beginners. Those that do not have a lot of knowledge or experience with flowers and green plants need to start out with heartier varieties that are easier to maintain. You simply can not give all plants the same amount of light, water or plant food and expect them all to do well. Too much water and light for some plants can spell disaster, while others might need a lot of both.

The trick to growing any plant indoors is to know about each plant you have individually. When you see a plant in the garden center that you would like to have in your home, read the little tag that will usually accompany it. It will tell you how much light, water and sometimes what type of plant food it will need. Sometimes you do not get enough information on the little tags and you will need to further investigate the plant in order to make it thrive.

The Internet is a great place to look up plants individually. You can find out all sorts of information about how much water it will need. You should be able to find out how much light is required as well. If a plant requires a lot of sunlight and your house can not provide it, it might be possible to substitute a grow light instead of natural light. Such is the case with plants like African violets. They need a lot of light, but not necessarily hot light like sunlight from a window tends to get sometimes.

Plants inside the home are beneficial as well as add a great decorative touch. You can easily add them to your house if you just take the time to read about certain houseplant species before you buy them. Look up plants that are easy to care for and you should be able to grow houseplants as well as someone who supposedly has a green thumb.
