subject: When Should You Use Grow Lights For Your Houseplants [print this page]

Growing houseplants can be a tricky business if you are not experienced with it. You can bring home plant after plant from your local garden center only to watch it wither and die in a matter of weeks. You can see that it is not thriving well, but you just do not know what to do about it. You have watered it everyday and you sit it near a window so it can get some sun, but it is still dying on you. This is why a lot of people end up with those unsightly artificial plants scattered throughout their house because they love the look of leafy green plants and flowers, but they just can not seem to grow them.

Just as with any other thing, you have to have the right information about every plant you intend to grow. Hardly any plants are the same just like animals and people are not the same. They require different environments and different food and water amount in order to grow well and be healthy. The slightest imbalance in their needs can cause them to be unhealthy and eventually die prematurely. Many houseplants can be kept alive for years and years with the proper care.

In order to grow healthy plants, no matter the species, you have to know what it needs. Learn the technical name for your plant and look it up either on the Internet or in a book. Books on houseplants are handy to own if you intend on growing things from now own, but you can likely find any information you need about individual plants just by researching on the Internet.

Find out how much water your plant needs and how often it needs it. You might also need to know what temperature it thrives best in. Sometimes if the soil it is in is too cold or too hot, it will affect the roots and it will not thrive as well. Some plants need more drainage than others. Lighting is also very important. Find out how much sunlight per day each individual plants needs. If you do not get the correct amount inside your home, then you might need to invest in a grow light to subsidize the amount of light a particular plant will get.

Joining a group or club that deals with houseplants or gardening can be enjoyable and helpful. By sharing your houseplant problems with others that grow them, you can have great conversations about them as well as learn things that they already know. Some people get pretty serious about their houseplants and they become sort of the same as a pet would be to others. After all, houseplants are living things too and some people get really attached to them.
