So, how much did you pay for your windows when you bought your house? No idea, huh? Your Agent never told you nor was it in the paperwork? Well, since most windows account for up to 15% of the total square foot, then a house that was purchased for $100,000 may have been as much as $15,000!The average square footageof a home is approximately 1500 square feet and sells for around $150,000. That means that there are most likely about 15 windows (avg window is 3X5 or 15square feet) in thehouse. You would have spent $22,500 for the existing 15 windows or about $1500 apiece!Good deal, huh? Of course not. Spend more time educating yourself in your next purchaseof windows and get an estimate.
The estimate is a cleverly disguisedsales attempt. Don't get mad at the company for trying to earn your business, but become educated during the time spent. You see, the average time spent in a home is between 2-3 hours based on several different factors. That is 2-3 hours of your life that you will NEVER get back. Invest in the time correctly so that you are not one of the thousands of American Consumers who fall for a quick sales pitch and then do not accomplish their goals. Salespeople who try to quickly convey information to you, don't have your best interests at heart. They are trying to satisfy their own, especially if the information is their company's propaganda based sales pitch. Of course their product, installation and warranty is superior...everyone's is best, right? Why not? You buy now and pay later...in the form of having to do the project over again at a doubled cost. Any company worth having in your home should be a company whose people are educated about the industry and it's pitfalls. They should share the possible problems and explain them to you. They should explain technical differences and break technology down to a version of "Replacement Windows for Dummies" so that anyone can understand. They should offer you choices and let YOU decide which works best for you, not simply show a one-size-fits-all window that you are sold, not that you BUY. This all requires TIME and you should be happy to invest the time to learn about a purchase that will impact your family's comfort for year's to come.
So the next time that you decide to get an estimate or several of them, make sure that you keep in mind that it may say FREE, but you will spend TIME to get that information. Be open-minded, listen and ask lots of questions. You should take notes and have a list of priorities that the project will need to solve before you buy. If you spend the time planning and learning, you will never have to spend another penny on windows. After all, you didn't do so well when you bought the house the first time, right? Neither did I, neither did I.
