The Truth About Scripture And Bionics

Religion is a very controversial topic these days and I don't feel I have the sort of finesse required to make arguments for or against it. The pride and arrogance of humans however is easier to address and there is less 'hell to pay' so to speak in doing so.

I recently saw a documentary on bionics. It said that science was now on the cusp of doing something that until now only the Bible has claimed to do: heal the blind. Well, first of all, I don't why the Bible was brought into this. Modern blindness will be cured by biotechnology, not by divine will. I'm not sure what the narration is attempting to imply by the comparison; that humans are Godlike? Since the dawn of civilization, humans have always sat down, figured things out, and created marvels of technology in this world. Bionic vision seems miraculous, and is indeed a wonderful development, but it was achieved through rational thought within the objective parameters of science, not through the divine staff.

The spiritual life of the recipient of such technology may undoubtedly be transformed, but it was not spirituality (other than inspiration) that created the new chip that allows the formerly blind to see again. I for one believe the world would be a much better place if we were all a little humbler about our accomplishments. Einstein certainly displayed a humble demeanor. Hawkings on the other hand certainly does not. I believe that our achievements would be farther reaching and benefit a far greater number of people if we realized that the true miracle in something as wonderful as bionics comes from that unexplainable quality in humans that pushes and inspires them to the greatest of frontiers and boundaries with the little resources they have. It is true that we cleverly invent, but maybe the real question from this angle becomes, did we invent ourselves?
