Will Diaspora Replace Facebook As the King of Social Sites?

There has been a great deal of discussion lately about Diaspora. The not yet quite developed, totally encrypted, open source social platform being developed by a group of 4 college kids. At first, it seemed like a bit of a stretch to think that these kids might actually give Facebook a run for the money, but upon thinking about it, it is entirely possible. Here is why.

It seems that every popular site on the internet has a shelf life. The internet is always evolving and changing and social popularity seems to be a very fickle beast. Remember chatrooms and ICQ? Ten years ago those were the places to connect with friends and meet new people. They were wildly popular. Do you know anyone who uses those platforms now?

Remember when Yahoo was THE search engine to get indexed in? It was your goal as a web developer to get your site manually approved and when you finally did..you had arrived! Then along came some upstart search engine called Google. Who would have ever thought that Yahoo could have been dethrowned?

Remember when eBay was the hottest property? Do you remember what happened to bring them down? They ticked off the sellers. They believed they were bigger than their users and thought they could do whatever they wanted and that people would stick by them because they had no other choice. Big mistake.

Remember MySpace? Everyone and their dog had a MySpace page and it was the hottest product on the market. Then along comes FaceBook and Twitter. How many people visit MySpace now?

Google has been the king of the hill for a long time now. Did I just read that Facebook got more traffic than Google? Have I really been seeing marketers choosing to buy advertising on Facebook rather than AdWords? Does this possibly mean that Google has reached the end of it's shelf life online? The fact is that Google has ticked a lot of people off by having a holier than though attitude. This has created the flood of interest in Facebook advertising.

With Facebook recently making changes in their privacy policy and have placed all of it's user's information out there for public viewing, many people vow they will delete their accounts and are looking for an alternative. I do see a pattern here. Sites get so large and so popular that they feel they can do whatever they want no matter how much it upsets the very people who have made them popular.

Is Diaspora the answer? Possibly. Only time will tell. But if history keeps repeating itself, perhaps those big sites should take a step back and actually listen to their users or these 4 college kids with a vision of total transparency and privacy just might do the unthinkable. What do you think?
