Ways to Manage Performance in the Organisation

With many organisations struggling for survival these days there is increase pressure to get the best out of their employees. This is generally evident in a performance management system. However, there are still real problems when using this process.

Surveys conducted in the GCC especially focusing on the UAE reveal that few are satisfied with their systems. Despite this, performance management with appraisal procedures is a well-established practice that drives decisions about pay, promotion, terminations, transfers and training requirements. So what are the faults and what can be done about them?

1) The systems are to be reviewed as a first step as it is outrageous to expect performance management systems which have been put in place years ago and to still remain effective. Therefore, an evaluation exercise would be a requirement to achieve an ongoing successful system.

2) Engagement of the managers is crucial to make this thriving. This will assist to secure the feedback on the effectiveness of this system. The redesigning of the system will take place according to their input and ensure that they are aligned with the employees responsibilities.

3) Addressing interpersonal and interviewing skills are natural to the process of good performance management. By having the agreed objectives, the appropriate training, coaching and interviewing techniques will assist here.

4) Having clear objectives would need to be addressed. It is crucial to decide on agreed, consistent and compatible objectives.

5) Keep in mind to follow up, therefore the management plays a role here. Review meetings are needed to occur on a regular basis.

6) Try to minimize the paperwork, all managers today feel paperwork is frustrating, so try to resent the additional work. Always put on your minds that the purpose of performance management is to motivate your employee for the purpose of improving the organisational performance and reach the company's objectives.
