Traffic cameras are always going to have bad reputations, so it's hardly surprising that locals in Battersea are complaining about theirs. What is surprising however is the story behind it, and how hundreds of people are being unfairly fined.
The camera in Battersea, south London, has been taking thousands of pounds from locals as it photographs people stopping in a prohibited box on the street. But drivers in the area claim that they cannot avid stipping here due to severe congestion in the area caused by extensive engineering works that were due to be finished a long time ago.
Up to two thousand drivers a month are receiving fines for being stuck at the junction at Battersea bridge road, as a camera erected above the traffic light films the whole scene. Any driver who stops for more than five seconds in the section risks a hefty fine of sixty pounds, rising if the fine is not paid promptly.
One lady appealed her ticket as the exit had been clear when she started moving, but pedestrians had caused her to have to block. She said she refused, after being made redundant, to pay the fines and encouraged other drivers to do the same, as she won her case.
A spokesman for the transport for London team made the normal noises and said that if anyone believes they have been fined unfairly, they should take it up with TFL, and that each case is individual.
