Online Computer Backup Services For Travelers

Imagine traveling to some exotic remote location in the world and having online file access to all your music, photos, banking info, or any other files that you have saved on your home PC? Rather than carrying an external hard drive while you travel, you can just as easily connect to a remote data storage system.

There are many companies that backup computers online for free or for a small monthly fee. Some of the big names are Carbonite, Mozy, Dropbox, and Sugarsync.

Online storage providers have four main purposes:

Serves as a remote external hard drive

Provides a backup system

Operates as a file sharing system with other people

Acts as your personal online computer data vault

Remote file storage permits an individual to save their important data anytime they have an online connection. Online data storage is crucial to those people who need to save their critical data.

When my wife traveled overseas for two months, she completely ran out of storage on her external hard drive. She had access to an Internet connection and could have used any of the free services that I talked about.

What really intrigues me about online file storage is the fact that anytime my data needs to be recovered, I have speed access to it anytime that I have an Internet connection. While it's not completely foolproof, it's foolish to not use a data backup service.

If you do not have access to the Internet, then bring an external hard drive and keep it in a secure place. Make sure that it is not kept in the same bag as your laptop.
