Correct Dimensions For Queen And King Size Beds

Buying a bed is a large undertaking, and mattresses are very expensive anyway. So why not go for the luxury and comfort of the King and Queen size bed dimensions? They are, in actuality, only a couple hundred dollars more than a double bed but can offer twice the comfort.

The actual dimensions of the beds stand thus by North American standards: a queen size mattress is 60 inches across and 80 inches long. This is only a few inches larger ( in either direction) than a full, or double, mattress which stands at 54 inches wide by 75 inches long.

It may sound like a great deal more, but when you actually measure it out and see how small a difference five and six inches are, you may not want to spend the extra couple hundred on a queen size bed. For some, however, those few inches are absolutely essential.

As for king size beds, there is no doubt that they are worth the price and are widely separated from the other mattresses. A king size bed stands 78 inches across by 80 inches long. The bed is almost square, offering you ample space to toss and turn.

Do not get confused about the difference between king and super king (also called a California king). Super kings are 72 inches by 84 inches, a bit narrower, a bit longer, and in need of specially bought sheets that are not nearly as available as other sizes. The super king is excellent for very tall individuals, but not good for much else.

There are a couple of other considerations, too. You must make sure your bedroom has enough room for you to still move about freely. Is a large bed really worth the limited space you will have? Will it be a pain to make every morning? If you buy a king mattress, do you want a king size box spring, or do you want two smaller size box springs underneath the king mattress?

One other thing to consider--something that has been under debate and study for quite a while--is the closeness of a relationship when buying a large bed. If you share a bed, it has been argued that the nearness with which a couple sleeps is in direct proportion to their closeness as a couple. Whether this is true or not is anyone's guess, but make sure you and your partner understand what it will really be like to sleep closer or farther apart.
