Despite rumors and speculation that Sony would show off a PSP 2 at E3 this year, nothing materialized, forcing guesses about how how they might compete with the iPad and iPhone into the future. Well, at least one studio claims to have one. When asked if the new "Mortal Kombat" reboot would launch on portable platforms, one of the studio's higher-ups gave an interesting answer.
"We're not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP 2 in the house and we're looking at the engine, like what can it support," Netherrealm Studios executive producer Shaun Himmerick told Industry Gamers. "Always a big thing for us is the performance."
So what is Sony's officially non-existent device like? Well, he talked about that, too.
"PSP 2 looks like it's a pretty powerful machine," Himmerick explained. "We don't have a 3DS system in house yet, but we're looking to get one, and we'll certainly look at what its power is."
Considering the number of launch titles Nintendo has already announced for the 3DS, that last detail is peculiar. Perhaps with all the mature content they were looking to attract prior to E3, the MK franchise just didn't make the cut. However, if the PSP 2 can support "MK," it sounds like you may be able to pick it up for that hypothetical platform sometime down the road.
