Fighting Dark Under Eye Circles

Have you ever had circles under your eyes that are so deep and dark, people think you have two black eyes? Believe it or not, under eye circles can get that bad if left untreated.

Some people have a genetic predisposition to raccoon looking eyes. The older a person gets, the more prominent the dark circles appear. Other causes for these deep circles can be swollen blood vessels, lack of sleep or too much sun. Medical conditions, such as thyroid problems or hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause can result in a darkened under eye area.

There is some relief you can find to alleviate the darkness underneath your eyes. Cold compresses can help reduce the swelling of the blood vessels. You can also try cooled teabags which will relieve the puffiness and reduce the darkness.

To help lighten up the area around your eyes, find a quality under eye cream that contains Vitamin K. This particular vitamin is useful in lessening the discoloured areas. Apply the eye cream gently and carefully, being careful not to pull or rub the delicate skin beneath the eye. Make sure your eye cream contains sunscreen, as the ultra-violet rays of the sun can make your condition worse.

When applying cosmetics to disguise your raccoon eyes, choose a concealer that is a shade or two lighter than your regular foundation. A liquid concealer with moisturizing properties is best, and should be reapplied as needed throughout the day. Investing in a good pair of sunglasses to wear year round can protect your eyes and the skin beneath, lessening the discolouring effect of the sun.

Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking ample amounts of fluids or water. Avoiding caffeine will help since it can make the problem worse. Eating properly and maintaining overall good health is one of the biggest factors to alleviate dark circles.

Since dark pigmentation beneath the eyes can be a symptom of a medical ailment, you should consult a physician if the problem persists. However, if dark circles under your eyes are an occasional problem from lack of sleep or too much stress, some cold compresses and a little concealer will get you through it.
