What The Social Network Meant to Me
What The Social Network Meant to Me

I'm really not a cinema fan. The last time I went to the cinema was to watch the Care Bare Movie with my mum in 1985. Nor am I a movie fan.... about the only film I've ever seen from start to finish is Top Gun and that's only because I've always harboured a secret longing to fly military aircraft and snog Kelly McGillis.

But I am a Facebook fan, on many levels. Personally I see it as a fantastic way of keeping in touch with friends and keeping abreast of social activities. But moreover from a business perspective. Since I discovered Facebook and social networking online for business, a wealth of new opportunities have presented themselves to me.

So, when I heard about David Fincher's new film The Social Network, an account of the birth of Facebook and it's genius creator Mark Zuckerberg I simply had to break my cinema fast and check it out. So, before I went I knew nothing more than the Social Network was a film about Facebook, written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher. Oh, and that it had received very mixed reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. But don't be mistaken, The Social Network, whilst clearly exhibiting the touch of a master filmmaker, is unmistakeably more a film about the world we live in today.

Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), a Harvard student, dreams of distinguishing himself; initially on campus and ultimately in the wider world. The lead's depiction of the creative yet socially inept, sociopath computer geek is superb, even with dialogue racing at 100mph that I personally struggled to keep up with at times.

When the relationship with his girlfriend inevitably fails in hysterical fashion, he channels his aggression online, blogging everything that follows and hacking into college databases to set up what he called Facemash, a site where users rate photographs of female students against each other.

It is received badly on most levels, but was the birth of the Facebook we have all grown to know and love. Originally he called it The Facebook, later on dropping the "The" upon the suggestion of Justin Timberlake's chancer character, Sean Parker, to make it punchier and hipper.

Beautifully cast and with subtle, dry humor throughout, it's a real insight into the birth of the social networking site, and the trials and issues that Zuckerberg had to endure to being us his dream.

I guess the point of the story, as I interpret it, is that the "human" element of the site got lost among all the greed, battles and court-cases. And the way I see it, all of us who continue to use it now owe it to the creators to embrace it and use it in the nature in which it was intended. It's there to help us network... with friends, with like minded people, with potential customers. It's there to keep us informed and help us to keep others informed. It's there to benefit us all, and that's exactly what we should be doing.

So watch and enjoy the movie folks... I was glad I did. And more to the point, keep using and enjoying Facebook.... for business, for pleasure, it matters not. It's a fabulous tool and we should all embrace it and thanks be to people like Mark Zuckerberg who's tenacity and creative genius continue t
