Whilst it is definitely true that the modern world has given private detectives the technology to push their investigations further, whether its through the use of GPS or electronic surveillance, today's world is also one of particular challenges.
For example, matrimonial investigations where once confined to the real world, and the surveillance of partners was often a case of physical tracking of vehicles etc. However, with the advent of modern technology an effective matrimonial investigation needs to be able to work on a virtual as well as a physical level.
For instance, the potential for infidelity has grown exponentially with the advent of the internet, and whilst many would argue that virtual adultery can never be as bad as the real thing, even an online affair can be of great distress to the "victim." Therefore, it should be one of the roles of a modern private to track e-mail correspondences, or to monitor social networks; remember, what starts out in the virtual domain can easily lead to actual, real world infidelity.
Corporate investigations have also been great effected by technology; and whilst, on the one hand, vehicle and asset tracking has revolutionized how corporate investigations work, there are also ways in which the advent of technology have made investigations more challenging.
An example of this is the fact that nowadays sophisticated technology can be implemented to obtain delicate corporate information, in all sorts of situations. Whilst the latest bugging technology can, of course, be used to an investigators advantage, it can also work the other way, and as part of an investigation service, many PIs offer a de-bugging service. Remember: when tracing bugging equipment it makes sense to seek the aid of those that know the technology best.
