Spiritual Apathy: Causes and Cures
Spiritual Apathy: Causes and Cures

Spiritual apathy can be defined as "the absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement; "and as "a lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting."

Here are some reasons why even committed believers sometimes experience spiritual apathy and lose our passion, excitement, concern, or zeal:

We may lack the energy it takes to build or create something new.

We may experience a crisis or downturn, and begin to believe that we don't have what it takes to move forward.

We start following people, and stop obeying God.

We stay still because we fear physical harm, loss of creature comforts,' or status.

We stop listening to the words that build us uppreaching, Scripture, encouragement from others.

If we live long enough, we will all feel apathetic toward something at some point in our lives.

In order to avoid apathy in our relationship with God, we need to identify strategies that will work for us over time so that we can avoid falling into the same pattern in the future. These actions can help you turn your spiritual apathy to spiritual action:

Name what you know to be absolutely true. Speak it aloud. What do you really believe? Not the party line' or the right answer,' but the truth. You can't move forward without this information.

Uncover your own personal set of values what's really important to you? What guides all of your other actions, and gives your life more meaning?

Create a personalized life mission statement that is in alignment with your true values and passions.

Develop a vision for your life that is grounded in and reflective of your beliefs and values.

Implement S.M.A.R.T.E.R. (specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, time-limited, evaluable, and resource-supported) goals that move you toward your vision step by step, day by day.
