U.S. Border Patrol Agent - Benefit and Salary Overview

Once you become a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, you are a sworn federal law enforcement officer and will be offered enhanced salary, as well as benefits, by the federal government.

Salary

The salary for an entry-level recruit ranges from $36,000 to $46,000 for the first year. Within three years there is the potential to earn up to $70,000.

By performing extra duty, you can expect to earn anywhere from 10-25% additional on your check. You can earn even more by working Sundays, holidays and night shifts.

Raises and Promotions

For the first few years of service, you will receive raises based on your performance ratings, and as an entry level agent, you have the potential to promote to a GL-11 grade.

If it is a supervisor position you desire, once you are promoted. a higher pay grade will apply.

Benefits

Your benefits will include federal health insurance, life insurance and disability insurance.

Training

While you are training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, you will be paid.

Leave of Absence

As a federal employee, you will earn 4 hours of leave for every 2 weeks of service. This applies to years 1-3 of your employment.

You will earn 6 hours of leave for each 2 weeks you serve beginning on your third year of service.

When you have exceeded 15 years, you will accrue 26 days of leave per year.

Retirement

As a federal law enforcement officer you will have an accelerated schedule for your retirement.

It is actually possible to retire at 20 years of service with full retirement benefits.
