There are a fixed set of steps that you need to work out from the outset. You need to plan your products from start to finish.
Taking an example of a simple application I had developed called PHP Inbox Mailer, here are some of the crucial steps that I followed.
First determine what is needed in terms of how it works. The 'how it looks" aspect can come later. The first step is to work out how your product needs to work in order to meet the needs of your customers. The next step is to then discover the best way to deliver your solution.
Think about this: Will it best as a web application or web service, or should I produce it as a desktop application. Maybe it will be best as an online service, or perhaps it only needs to function offline or perhaps online and offline.
Only once you have these fundamentals in place you can then determine how your solution should be produced and delivered.
There are thousands of ways to build and make an app. Technology is everywhere you look, there are 1000's of programming languages, loads of hosting providers - and not just for the web. All you need is your product idea and the rest will fall into place, and rather quickly.
The Basics
You need to map out your product creation plan from start to finish. If you don't you simply will never get anything done.
Next Step will be Research
Focus on the what your customers are looking for, how you can help them, and with what can you help them fix their problem. In other words, what solution will you provide them.
Delivery
Once you have the need and decide on what you will deliver, you need to be thinking about the most affective way to deliver it. Can it be an application, a web service, an online solution or offline or both.
You see it is fairly logical....most people would go as far as to say that it's a science.
Next The Fun part - Design and Development
The best part is once you have the information outlined for your project, the who, what, how, where etc you can then decide on the design and development criteria.
There are tons of resources available that can assist you with that. I myself am always willing to assist where I can.
Conclusion
It does not have to be overwhelming. The most important part though is to take Action! Do it right now.
Find a need, decide on a solution for that need, then design, develop and market.
Oh yeah - Don't forget to Rinse and Repeat
Eventually you will have quite a few products and services out there and you will be bringing in some nice and steady income.
Most importantly is that without a consumer need, there is no need for a product and without taking action there is no product either. So make sure you address both need and action.
