I have a 1 year old son named Brandon and he is the joy of my life. When he was born, my mom and dad were so happy to have a grandson, however my mom said she was sad that she wouldn't be able to see him grow up because they live so far away. Currently my parents live in Oregon, while my husband and I live in Minnesota. It gets more and more difficult for them to travel the older they get. My dad refuses to fly - I think he's scared to death of planes but he won't admit it.
What I wanted to do was find a way for my grandparents to have access to their grandson outside of our once or twice a year family get-togethers. Sure I could text them pictures, but I thought there should be an easier way. That's when I decided to build a personal website for my son that would allow grandma and grandpa to just click on a link and have access to hundreds of pictures of Brandon so they could see him and watch him grow up.
Now I don't know about you, but I didn't know a thing about building websites at first. But after doing some reading, I found that it actually can be very easy. You don't need to know coding or any of that technical stuff. You just need to have a "host" which is like your own little piece of internet real estate. After that, you just install something called "WordPress" which makes it easy for the average person to manage a website. If you can read a newspaper or send an e-mail, you can use WordPress to run a website.
The first thing you need to do is find a host like GoDaddy or HostGator. You can start your own site for as little as $8 or $9 a month. Once you buy your hosting package, you will get an e-mail telling you how to log in. After you log in, you just install WordPress and then you can start uploading pictures of your baby! If you can't figure out how to install WordPress, just send the host an e-mail and they will walk you through it.
My parents are so happy I did this. It makes it so much easier for them to just type in Brandon's website address and be able to see all the pictures I uploaded, rather than have me text pictures of him every once in a while. If you have a newborn, or have one on the way, I really suggest giving this a try. It's easy and it gives you an opportunity to show off your little pride and joy!
