How To Keep My Dog From Barking When People Leave My House?

How can I keep my dog from barking or growling when people are leaving the house? You may be saying to yourself that this is just impossible and it cannot be done. Do not feel so bad, you are not alone. This seems to be a most common behavior among most dog owners.

There are some things that you can do to help your pet not to jump, growl and bark when your guests leave. All you need is some patience, time, and treats. Here are some valuable tips that you can use for stopping this behavior in your dog:

If your dog acts inappropriately when someone gets ready to leave the house, you need to correct his behavior proactively instead of reactively.

Teach the dog to do something else while people are walking out the door. For example, make him sit and remain calm. Use treats and teach him gradually. Build it up by having a person go towards the door and then back again. Then ask that person to open the door. Immediately reprimand (through voice commands) the dog if he barks, and reward him for staying quiet. Reinforce each small step with praise and a treat.

Eventually the person will be able to leave through the door without your dog barking, growling, or jumping. When this happens, be sure to reward your dog when the guest leaves for the first time with praise and a treat. Over time, you will not have to reward your dog with a treat or praise.

With lot of patience and time, you can teach your dog not to bark, growl or jump as your guests are leaving your home. This will make everyone happy and keep peace in he family as well as your dog.

Happy dog training!
