When someone first told me about electronic cigarettes and how they were going to become massive over the next few years (this was a couple of years ago), I have to confess not only did I not believe them, but I actually laughed! Of course, my viewpoint was an uneducated and naive one, after all I was laughing about something I hadn't even realised existed prior to being told at that moment.
Less than two full years later, things are different. Let's just say I have revaluated my position on the subject of e cigarettes. I now believe that if they are allowed to be, the e cig has the potential to dramatically change the world.
The electronic cigarette is a nicotine delivery device, often modelled much like its tobacco counterpart (in shape at least) but contains no tobacco and can even be used without any nicotine if so desired. When inhaled, the device delivers a hit of nicotine to the user and when exhaled a smoke like substance is seen, again much like a regular cigarette. However, this is not smoke but simply a water vapor that vanishes into the atmosphere within seconds.
So, why have I had this huge turnaround of opinion? Well, it's quite simple really, people believe in the product. What I once thought was just a crazy money making gimmick and something that might have its day in the spotlight and then disappear as suddenly as it seemed to arrive has become this product that I am really interested in and that people are purchasing in their droves!
Why has it become so popular? Smokers and now many ex smokers are utterly convinced that this electronic cigarette can help them quit or at the very least help them to reduce the amount of tobacco cigarettes they smoke. But, they face strong opposition in the form of health authorities and sections of governments and indeed some of the larger population who would prefer that the e cig doesn't have mass availability.
Who will win this gargantuan tug of war? It's impossible to predict right now, there is so much argument and counter argument with each side earning victories and suffering defeats but with so many people championing the e cigarette's cause, you certainly wouldn't bet against people power winning out in the end. Alas, only time will tell, but if you have any interest in the future of smoking, tobacco and cigarettes etc, then it's certainly a contest you can't afford to take your eyes off.
