BMW recall 350,000 cars

1st October 2010

Car giants BMW are set to recall 350,000 luxury BMW and Rolls-Royce cars worldwide because of a problem with the brakes.

The German car maker said the recall was due to a fault with the power-braking system but the cars were not unsafe. The recall affects V8 and V12-powered BMW 5 series, 6 series, 7 series and Rolls-Royce models produced between July 2001 and November 2009.

Of the total, 11,427 cars - including 905 Rolls-Royces - are in the UK, and 198,000 in the US. 800 of the vehicles are Rolls-Royce Phantom models being recalled globally. Globally, 348,000 BMWs are affected, plus a further 5,800 Rolls-Royces. They are currently writing to all owners involved to arrange a service appointment.

In a statement made by the company they said the problem was "without danger" and there was no risk of drivers being unable to stop their cars. "In the affected vehicles, a leak may develop in the power braking system, potentially causing a vacuum loss and consequent reduction of power braking assistance," continuedthe company statement.

A similar problem was revealed this year in some BMW motorbikes. In May BMW announced a recall of 122,000 motorcycles worldwide due to the discovery of a leak in the braking system. The German vehicle manufacturer said a risk of leaks had been identified in the K 1200 GT model.

These problems are not exclusive to BMW. Japanese carmaker Toyota has recalled more than 8.5 million cars worldwide due to both accelerator and brake pedal faults.
